What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #47 Treadmills

– Hey everybody, how are you, it's Jeff Gellman of Solid K9 Training with my What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day, tip number 47 Treadmills

Treadmills are a fantastic training tool for both mentally and physically tiring our your dog The cool thing about treadmills is this Alright, you're too lazy to walk your dog, no it's not what it's about It's 9:15 at night right now, my wife is sick, my kids are home, maybe I wanna exercise my dogs Maybe I can't leave my kids home alone

Maybe I'm a single father, maybe I'm a single mother Maybe I work split shifts with my spouse And maybe I can't walk my dogs right now at night, or at certain hours of the day because I don't want to leave my kids at home, or maybe it's night and I'm not comfortable being outside in night where I live Or if it's pouring rain, or if it's snowing Sure, I let my dogs out to go to the bathroom, but maybe I just don't wanna walk them

So what do I do? Treadmill, it's fantastic Right now, I'm in my office, I've got a treadmill right over there, I could have a dog on the treadmill They could be walking at 25 to three miles per hour, they can do for five minutes, they can do for 30 minutes, they can do it for longer It is very difficult for a dog to walk on a treadmill at the exact same pace, they can't slow down, they can't speed up, they can't turn right, they can't turn left

It takes a huge amount of concentration It's mentally exhausting for the dog, more than anything It's great for nervous dogs, it's great for fearful dogs It's really wonderful during that aggression rehab process, as well So I can have one dog on the treadmill, one dog in place

I can be getting work done, 30 minutes later, swap them out, one more exercise that we did for the day, both mental and physical So treadmills are fantastic for dogs and for owners, and I've got how to videos on my YouTube channel that explains how to start a dog on a treadmill Almost every one of my seminars, if there's a treadmill there, I demonstrate it It takes anywhere from 15 seconds to a couple of minutes to get a dog to get used to the treadmill It's a couple of different techniques to do it

I show them in my videos so you can do it Also, you don't need to get a dog treadmill Get yourself a human treadmill Right now, what is this? We're in the middle of February, so right now there's a bunch of drier racks that are for sale, that have treadmill, they look like treadmills, but they're actually just for hanging clothes on It's February and we got 'em in December

Two months later, they're hanging clothes Now what you do, is you pick them up for under $100 They're inexpensive, they're really, really inexpensive They're fabulous training tools, so give it a shot Jeff Gellman of Solid K9 Training
